She’s got the music in her

This week has been a tough week for me, with many more ‘downs’ than ‘ups’. My plan this week was to write about that and some of the lessons I had learned. And I’m sure if I laid out the list, some of you might agree that it was a tough week. But let’s face it – today is the 7th day of the week to me, and Sunday was fairly uneventful (But I did get to spend a large part of the day enjoying football). So that leaves 5 days…just 5 days. 5 days in the scheme of a month, a year, heck, my life. ‘And Robyn, the tag line of your blog is “Every day might not be good but there is goodness in everyday”’. As I think back through my week, that is absolutely true. So why do I sit down to write today with a list of things about this week that have been tough? Why in the heck does that even matter? Again – 5 short days in the scheme of things.

However, after reflecting on this, I do think there is one part of my week that might be of interest to you. It’s a video that is 9 minutes – 9 minutes – yet I cannot get it off my mind. Actually it’s 8 minutes and 34 seconds.  What is this video?  It is the story of a little girl with autism. A little girl whose road has been tough –  a little girl whose doctors told her parents that she might never speak. A little girl whose parents never gave up – and never stopped believing in their daughter regardless of how every day must have been. A little girl who found the music in her that is opening doors rather than allowing her autism to close doors. And, in my opinion most crucially, a little girl who believed in herself!

The video is a look into her life, culminating in her playing the piano (yes, the piano) and singing her favorite song – Firework by Katy Perry – on stage at the Autism Speaks fundraiser. As she sings and plays, Katy Perry herself joins her. While that is moving – and as Katy joins, there’s a small grin from her – she keeps playing and singing – never missing a note.

The video in itself is moving, especially as the song ends and she comes from behind the piano to join Katy on stage – watch through to the end to see how she responds to the applause. While this on its own is amazing and moving, before you scroll to the video below just take a minute to review the lyrics:

Firework by Katy Perry – the lyrics come to life when sung by this little girl Jodi DiPiazza, I wish I could single out one phrase that makes this all the more meaningful – however it’s really the entire song, performed by her:

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag,
Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards,
One blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep?
6 feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there’s still a chance for you
‘Cause there’s a spark in you

You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in “awe, awe, awe”

You don’t have to feel like a wasted space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe your reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it’s time, you’ll know

You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make ’em go “Oh, Oh, Oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in “awe, awe, awe”

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It’s always been inside of you, you, you
And now it’s time to let it through-ough-ough

‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, Oh, Oh”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make ’em go “Oh, Oh, Oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in “awe, awe, awe”

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

After this – I can’t but adjust the lens on how I see my week – and you know what? It was a good week! What about you? How was your week?
