Chick-Fil-A: What Are You Serving?

How about a follow on to my post on circles? Last week we went to Chick-Fil-A for lunch. While I was sitting there, I watched a fella come in and as he came through the door, he looked behind the counter and immediately crouched down. Then he started to move very slowly, never taking his eyes off the people behind the counter.

For just a minute, I was a little concerned. It almost appeared he was there to rob the place! And I wasn’t sure whether to crouch down, and tackle him, or just wait and see what he might be up to. I was leaning towards tackling him – and he’s lucky I didn’t.

Once he got behind the counter, he snuck up behind the manager, and she turned around and threw her arms around him. She was beside herself, she was so happy. Both of them were so excited that I found myself excited for them…and even a little moved.

As it turned out, he was there to pick up some catering. He picked up his order, loaded his car and was off. After he left, the girl who was the manager was still happy and even talking to her friends behind the counter about how excited she was.

I couldn’t help myself – I just had to know what had happened. So I went over to her; I made sure she knew she didn’t have to tell me, but if she was open to sharing, I was very curious to understand what had happened. I shared with her how the fella had entered the store and crouched down and that I had even thought he might be there to rob them. She laughed, and asked me if I’d noticed he was wearing a Chick-Fil-A uniform? I let her know that, because it was different than the ones they wore, it had taken me a minute to process that. And then she explained he was her best friend and that he worked at another store. As it turns out, they have known each other for a while but because they don’t work in the same store or go to the same school, they don’t get to see each other every day. As she was explaining their friendship to me, she was very excited and moved that he’d surprised her like that! It made me think again of how, yes, circles are better than rows!

So let me ask you – is there someone in your world you should throw your arms around, ‘just because’ – whether as a surprise or not? A small hug could make a person’s day, week, month, who knows! Don’t be shy…how about we all agree that, before this week comes to an end, we lean into someone or even a crowd we find special in our world and give them a hug? This week won’t come again. And who couldn’t use an extra hug or two this week?
